  18. <p>     After being crowned Miss USA, Carole Gist, 20, smiled
  19. beautifully. Then her predecessor, Gretchen Polhemus, weighed
  20. in with advice: Get a lawyer. Polhemus warned about "bad stuff"
  21. from her reign, including an inflexible schedule and thousands
  22. in cash and prizes not yet received. "Pageant officials have
  23. been up-front with me so far," says Gist, the former Miss
  24. Michigan. But she's nobody's fool. The new queen is consulting
  25. a financial adviser--and a lawyer as well. Winning isn't
  26. everything.
